I mean, I’m not saying they didn’t make meaningful contributions to rock & roll, and I like Joe Walsh, and I respect Don Henley because playing drums and singing is fucking hard in my experience, but if I hear Hotel California or Take It Easy or any number of other songs in their catalog again I’m going to throw the speakers out a window.

Steely Dan to me is a tragedy, that’s what. Phenomenally talented musicians with the ability to innovate and a solid backing in jazz throwing it away in endless noodling and smugger-than-thouness, disappearing up their own backsides. Also a really poorly chosen wheedly vocal motif.

I don’t know that they really did make meaningful contributions, I just like their harmonies and the kind of easy going vibe that their songs tend to have. I pretty much consider them a guilty pleasure. It helps that I don’t hear them all that often so I’m not burned out on them.
